Looking for a safe automatic litter box with odor reduction, efficient self-cleaning, and a leak-proof liner? The PuraMax 2 from PETKIT offers these features and more.
With a sealed waste bin, N50 pet odor eliminator, and an optional Air Purifier Smart Spray that kills 99% of bacteria, it eliminates odors at the source. While I wasn’t entirely happy with its deep cleaning process, it excels at daily scooping and its leakproof liner worked well.
After weeks of testing, I found that the PuraMax 2 will likely please some cat parents and aggravate others. Let’s get into my full review and recommendations below.

Why Trust Cats.com
With seven senior cats of my own, I know how much work traditional litter boxes create for busy cat parents. Scooping daily is a chore, especially in multi-cat homes.
Through testing several automatic litter boxes for Cats.com, I’ve also learned that the wrong self-scooping litter box can add to the hassle, rather than eliminate it. While reviewing the PuraMax 2, I made notes on my cats’ use of the litter box, its daily performance, and how easy it was to deep clean.
Puramax 2 Automatic Litter Box and PETKIT Overview

Katelynn Sobus / Cats.com
PETKIT is a relatively new pet company, founded in 2013. They aim to improve animal welfare using technology ranging from automatic pet feeders and water fountains to pet cameras and automatic litter boxes. The company releases a new product yearly.
The Puramax 2 automatic litter box was designed with efficiency in mind, aiming to make deep-cleaning easy with a leak-proof seal, multiple methods of odor reduction, and the ability to use various types of cat litter.
Puramax 2 Automatic Litter Box Features
The PuraMax 2 is designed for easy clean-up, but it doesn’t always meet these standards. It features a leakproof liner, several deodorization methods (including an optional air purifying spray that connects to the inside of the drum), and a sealed, locking waste drawer.
The entrance is low to the ground and easy for cats to climb into. The litter box comes with two sifters, designed for either the small granules found in clay litter or longer particles such as those found in most tofu litter. According to PETKIT, it works with most types of clumping litter but does not work with crystal litter.
The drum scoops by rolling forward and back, rather than rocking side to side. Similar designs are dangerous for cats as they can get trapped within the drum if the sensors fail. However, the PuraMax 2 is designed so that it doesn’t turn fully, and the entrance to the litter box is always open. It also includes 11 safety sensors for your cat’s protection.
Most self-cleaning litter boxes empty themselves with the press of a button, but the PuraMax requires something called the “magnetic cat litter remover.” I was hoping that this piece would work well, but instead it ended up being another part to clean, without any added benefit. The litter emptying process takes ages and leaves behind a lot of litter, even when run multiple times.
Another thing to know about this one is that it’s meant to sit on hard floors, rather than carpet. You’ll see in my photos that I had to place it in my carpeted living room as that’s where I have space, but I did turn the auto-scoop function off for safety purposes. This made the weight sensor inaccurate, but otherwise the litter box worked just as intended.
What We Like
- 11 safety sensors and an entrance that’s always open, ensuring your cat’s safety
- Includes a litter mat and a roll of 20 thick, sturdy waste bags
- Locking waste drawer seals in odors
- N50 pet odor eliminator and Air Purifier Smart Spray for added odor elimination
- Includes two sifters for different litter types and sizes
- PETKIT app is easy to navigate
What We Dislike
- Won’t empty without the magnetic cat litter remover, which doesn’t work well at removing litter from the drum
- Designed for use on hard floors, not carpets, rugs, or mats
What Did Our Test Cats Think?
The PuraMax 2 requires very little assembly and was very easy for me to set up, linking to the app without difficulty.
My typical experience with automatic litter boxes is that my smallest cats use them, while my cats above ten pounds ignore them completely. This was also true of the PuraMax 2, which was unsurprising. My small cats did like and use the litter box, and the scooping worked just as it should. The leak-proof technology also worked well for me, and held up even when my cat urinated a large amount at the very back of the liner.
The biggest downside to any self-cleaning litter box is the deep cleaning required, but I found the PuraMax 2 to be more tedious than usual. Emptying the litter from the drum requires the “magnetic cat litter remover,” an extra piece that fits over the litter sifter. I was hoping this piece would make removing the litter more effective, but the PuraMax did the job more poorly than any other automatic litter box I’ve tried, while taking much longer to empty. After two attempts, I gave up on it emptying itself and finished the job with my vacuum.
The one good thing about deep-cleaning this litter box are the bags, which are remarkably sturdy. Most automatic litter boxes include bags that feel as though they’ll tear, especially when holding an entire drum’s worth of litter, but I didn’t have that worry with these.
Another thing that stood out to me about the PuraMax 2 were its safety features, including a door that’s always open so your cat can’t get stuck inside if the sensors fail.
Overall, I think this is a great choice for its odor elimination, safety features, and leak-proof liner. However, it’s not the easiest to deep clean and for the price, I wish it had performed better in this area.
What Do Customers Think of the Puramax 2?
Positive Reviews
“The PuraMax 2 is even better than the first. It’s much quieter and faster than the original. I also love that the plastic sifting grates and the cleaning piece are magnetic so they easily stick together…the original cleaning piece was more difficult to put on.” – by Storm on Amazon
“When our old Litter Robot broke after three years, I found the PuraMax 2 Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box by Petkit and it’s been a game-changer! Perfect for our one-cat household, this compact machine uses less litter, takes up less space, and runs quietly.” – by Shuyun on Chewy, Jan 2, 2025
Reviewers enjoy how easy the Puramax 2 is to set up and use, with some noting that it works even better than the original Puramax. Most are happy with the functionality and odor control as well.
Negative Reviews
“Followed the directions but it won’t auto clean and sense that there is a cat that went in the box. I’ve tried troubleshooting but no luck.
I can have it manually clean on my phone but that defeats a lot of the purpose.” – by Robert S. on Amazon
“I spent $600 on this self cleaning box, which works okay at times, but my cat ends up pooping outside the box because he doesn’t fit. I Absolutely do not recommend for larger cats.” – by Terese on Chewy, Mar 17, 2025
Most negative reviewers comment on either urine leakage, technical malfunctions such as the sensors not working properly, or the size of the litter tray. Many reviewers are unhappy with the price of the Puramax 2, especially given the problems they’ve had with their products.
