Why Trust Cats.com
I’ve owned cats for 15 years, so I’ve seen plenty of cat litter brands come and go. Once a novelty, alternative cat litters are more accessible (and effective) than ever before, and I’ve tried more of them than I can count. When Tuft & Paw—the same brand that makes one of my favorite litter boxes released their own cat litter product, I was intrigued.
When Really Great Cat Litter was first released, I spent several months testing it. The lightweight, elongated pellets turned out to be a great option for my senior cat with sensitive toes. Since then, they’ve continued to fine-tune their formula, improving features like odor control, and adding a scented version to their line-up. So, I wanted to give it another go.
Throughout the process, I made observations about my cats’ response to the litter as well as the product’s effectiveness in key categories such as dustiness, tracking, clumping ability, and odor control.
Tuft & Paw Brand Overview

Kate Barrington / Cats.com
Founded in 2016, Tuft & Paw is headquartered in North America in Vancouver, Canada. Tuft & Paw was created by Jackson Cunningham out of a desire to develop pet furniture that’s both stylish and functional. The self-described cat-first company offers everything from modern litter boxes and expert-formulated wet food to a futuristic-looking spherical cat bed nestled in a powder-coated steel base.
In the years since the company’s founding, Tuft & Paw has expanded its product line to include other cat essentials like the Porto travel carrier, the popular Cove and Cubby high-sided litter boxes, and several innovative cat trees, towers, and beds.
In 2023, Tuft & Paw released Really Great Cat Litter. A flushable alternative to clumping clay cat litter, Really Great Cat Litter is made from soybean fiber—a byproduct of the process through which tofu is made. The brand updated its original tofu litter in 2025 and added a lightly scented lavender option.
Really Great Cat Litter is sold in 9.25-pound bags for $29 each. You can save money by buying it in multipacks (3 or 5 bags), but you’ll get the biggest savings with a subscription. Shipping is always free for Subscribe & Save orders and one-time orders over $99.
Really Great Cat Litter Features

Kate Barrington / Cats.com
Unlike clay cat litter, Really Great Cat Litter consists of lightweight pellets rather than heavy granules. Their size and cylindrical shape helps keep them from sticking to your cat’s paws in order to reduce tracking. It comes in two formulas, unscented charcoal and lightly scented lavender.
Really Great Cat Litter is virtually dust-free, and any dust it might produce isn’t harmful to your cat the way silica dust can be. The base formula consists primarily of soybean fiber but also contains calcium carbonate, corn starch, and pea fiber. For those who prefer unscented litter, the charcoal recipe stands out among tofu litters because it contains activated carbon, a unique ingredient that supports long-lasting odor control. The scented option contains dried lavender to give it a subtle floral aroma without the use of artificial fragrance or essential oils.
Where many natural and alternative cat litters shine is in their absorbency and Really Great Cat Litter is no different. Tuft & Paw describes its soybean fiber material as a “moisture magnet,” a claim that appears to be supported by customer experience. The litter absorbs liquid to form scoopable clumps that harden as they dry.
One thing worth noting is that some cats need time to transition to using pellet-style litter while others take to it more readily. Tuft & Paw offers detailed instructions for transitioning your cat onto Really Great Cat Litter, just be sure to keep some of your cat’s old litter around until you see how they respond to this product.
The other feature that makes Really Great Cat Litter notable is that it’s flushable. It’s important to follow Tuft & Paw’s instructions for flushing this litter (and it might not work for every household) but it’s nice to have an option other than throwing it in the trash.
Really Great Cat Litter is primarily sold on Tuft & Paw’s website via one-time order or recurring subscription. You can also buy it on Amazon or Chewy and at your local PetSmart.
What We Like:

What Did Our Test Cats Think?

Kate Barrington / Cats.com
I’ve tested Really Great Cat Litter twice—once when it was originally released and again when it was updated in 2025. Both times, I started out using it in one of Tuft & Paw’s litter boxes (first the Cove and then the Cubby), but I’ve since used it in a number of others with equally positive results.
The first thing I noticed about Tuft & Paw’s litter was the packaging. It comes in bags rather than boxes with a sturdy handle and resealable top. This design made the litter easy to pour and it seemed to take up less space than a box. Unfortunately, the bags themselves don’t appear to be recyclable but they ship in a standard recyclable cardboard box.
Another characteristic that sets Really Great Cat Litter apart from other clay alternatives I’ve tried is the size and shape of the granules. They’re narrow, oblong pellets about ½ inch in length. Though the litter is pretty lightweight, the shape of the pellets helped to reduce tracking. There’s also virtually no dust and the charcoal formula has no noticeable scent.
I was very impressed with Really Great Cat Litter when I first tested it and that hasn’t changed. The product stands up to its promise of being ultra-absorbent and it doesn’t develop an unpleasant odor when wet like some pine-based products I’ve tried. I’m hesitant to flush cat litter with any regularity, but it worked as described when I tried it with a few small pieces.

One thing I noticed that’s worth bearing in mind is that, though Really Great Cat Litter does form clumps, they take a little while to harden. The wet litter stays sticky for about 15–20 minutes until it dries out. You can still scoop the damp clumps easily enough but it may stick to your scoop if you do.
My cats didn’t seem to have any issues transitioning to Really Great Cat Litter and they didn’t seem averse to the size or texture of the pellets. I have an abundance of litter boxes in my house and I like using this product in ones I tend not to check every day. This gives the clumps extra time to harden and I haven’t found odor to be a problem.
What Do Customers Think of Really Great Cat Litter?
Since Tuft & Paw started selling Really Great Cat Litter on Chewy and Amazon, reviews of the product are more numerous than they were at first. As of September 2025, Really Great Cat Litter had over 500 customer reviews on both Amazon and Chewy with an average rating over 4 out of 5 stars.
At tuftandpaw.com, reviews remain plentiful. Really Great Cat Litter has more than 7,600 reviews and a 4.5 out of 5-star average rating. Only about 15% of customers rated the product less than 5 stars and only 8% gave it a rating of less than 3 stars.
Positive Reviews
Satisfied customers appear to be overwhelmingly impressed with Really Great Cat Litter’s low-dust formula and minimal tracking. Numerous reviewers admit skepticism prior to trying the product (especially it being flushable) but changed their minds. Many positive reviews also mention the product’s clumping ability and that it lasts longer than a similar volume of clay litter.
“I’ve tried just about every cat litter out there from clay, clumping, crystals, to pine pellets you name it. Nothing does the job as well as Really Great Cat Litter.” – Miranda on Chewy.com on August 26, 2025
“I was hesitant to believe the “hype.” Could it really be that good? Well, new kitten and I have been using this litter for 4 weeks now and I must say it is AMAZING. It is VERY LOW tracking (and super easy to clean up the few pellets that get out 1 to 2 feet), VERY LOW dust, and clumps GREAT.” – Julie on Amazon.com on August 25, 2025
Negative Reviews
Few of the negative reviews for Really Great Cat Litter mention any serious problems with the product—most simply say the customer was less impressed with the litter than they hoped to be. Some reviewers were disappointed with the litter’s odor control (particularly for feces) and cost. Several mention that it’s tricky to scoop or that it sticks to the litter box when wet.
“Good at reducing litter being tracked all over the place but is not as odor controlling as it claims to be. I’ve had charcoal tofu litter before and it did a decent job so I was surprised this one didn’t. Better than clay litter still and less messy than crystals.” – Ashley on Amazon.com on August 20, 2025
“Overall it doesn’t track as much as traditional litter. However it doesn’t do anything for odor and it gets stuck in my cats paws alot to the point I hear her repeatedly rubbing her paws on the floor to get it loose.” – Austin on Chewy.com on July 27, 2025
Overall, Is Really Great Cat Litter a Good Choice?
If you’re looking for an alternative to clay cat litter, especially one that’s eco-friendly, Really Great Cat Litter is worth considering. The shape and texture of the pellets may take getting used to for some cats, and there may be a learning curve for some pet parents when it comes to scooping, but the product is consistent and generally well-liked.
Really Great Cat Litter is also ideal for pet parents who prefer the convenience of a recurring subscription. It’s a fairly pricey product when you place a one-time order, but you’ll save between 25–35% on your first Subscribe & Save order with a 5% discount and free shipping on all future orders. And if you’re thinking about changing your cat’s diet, you can build your own bundle with Tuft & Paw’s Really Great Cat Food.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Really Great Cat Litter made from?
Tuft & Paw’s Really Great Cat Litter is an eco-friendly alternative to clay made from byproducts of soybean processing. Aside from soybean fiber, the litter contains corn starch, corn flour, guar gum, and a little bit of charcoal to help with odor control.
Is Really Great Cat Litter actually flushable?
It depends. While Really Great Cat Litter is designed to be septic safe and flushable, you shouldn’t just scoop directly from the box into your toilet. Break up the clumps into small pieces and let them soak until softened before you flush.
Keep in mind that some plumbing systems might not be able to handle it, so know that flushing any cat litter comes with a risk of clogs.
Does this litter clump?
Yes. Really Great Cat Litter forms scoopable clumps but they may not harden as quickly or as completely as clumping clay litter. It works best with a litter scoop that has wide, long slots instead of round holes.
Can Really Great Cat Litter be used in automatic litter boxes?
No. While this cat litter does form clumps, they might break apart too easily for self-cleaning litter boxes. The narrow pellets might also get stuck in the mechanical parts of certain automatic litter boxes. Tuft & Paw recommends pairing it with their all-in-one Cove litter box system.
