With so many sustainable cat litters out there, it can be difficult to know which to choose. Weruva cat litter shines in several areas, including odor control, lack of dust, and a pleasant yet not overpowering scent. However, it also has its drawbacks.
I put this litter to the test in my multi-cat home to see how cats really feel about it. I also took notes on my own experience as a cat parent, and whether it made the chore of scooping the litter box easier or more difficult.
Why Trust Cats.com
I’m a lifelong cat owner who’s tried dozens of litter brands throughout the years, and reviewed several here at Cats.com. With seven senior cats, I’d hate to add up all of the hours I’ve spent scooping litter boxes, but it’s taught me what to look for in a great cat litter: ease of use, odor control, and price-effectiveness.
I tested the Weruva cat litter for a month in my multi-cat home, taking notes on my experience using the litter, what my cats thought, and the amount of tracking and dust around the litter box.
Brand Overview
Weruva is a family-owned business that was founded in 2006. The founders named the company after their own cats–Webster, Rudi, and Vanessa–using the first two letters from each of their names.
The brand is best known for its pet food, with several product lines for cats including Weruva Cat, Soulistic, and BFF (Best Feline Friend). Their goal is to make carnivore-focused foods with few carbohydrates, and to be transparent with pet parents about their animals’ nutrition.
Weruva also offers a small selection of cat accessories, including a few toys, a litter box, and Weruva cat litter.

Weruva Classic Fresh Scented Clumping Cat Litter Features

Katelynn Sobus / Cats.com
Weruva cat litter is long-lasting, odor-reducing, and fresh-scented. While many wood pellet litters are non-clumping, Weruva forms clumps that, given enough time, are easy to scoop.
This natural cat litter is made from hinoki wood and green tea, which both work to reduce bacteria and odors in the litter box. The wood is sourced as a byproduct from other industries.
While the litter does have a natural fragrance, it doesn’t contain perfumes and isn’t overpowering. The pellets are thin and short, less than half an inch long. This makes them more comfortable for cats’ feet than larger pellets, but some cats may prefer the kind of small, round granules found in traditional clay litters.
However, the biggest drawback to this litter is that it’s expensive, even compared to other sustainable choices on the market.
You may also dislike that it can’t be used in an automatic litter box due to its pelleted shape. It would likely cause both litter waste, as the litter wouldn’t sift correctly, and blockages in the sifter due to the large granules.
What We Like
- Scent is fresh and natural, not overpowering
- Contains odors extremely well
- Made with sustainable ingredients
- One bag can last for up to 30 days, depending on the number of cats in the home
What We Didn’t Like
- Time-consuming to scoop with your average litter sifter–we recommend buying one with large slats!
- Expensive compared to other natural litters
What Did Our Test Cats Think?
My cats took to this litter quickly for urine and used it regularly. I kept it out alongside other litters I was testing and our usual clay litter, so they had plenty of choice, including litters with smaller granules. Every cat is different, but mine tend to stay clear of pooping in pelleted litters. This isn’t something unique to Weruva!
I found the litter easy to scoop when I was going after noticeable clumps, but sifting through the box for buried waste was more difficult because it sifts very slowly. I recommend using a scoop with large slats so that it doesn’t take you minutes to scoop each litter box. Ordering from Amazon will get you a free scoop, though I can’t speak to its quality since I ordered the litter by itself from Chewy.
Another issue I had during scooping is that the clumps sometimes break apart, leaving small pieces behind that are too small to be sifted out. This only happened to me once, when I tried to scoop shortly after my cat had used the box.
It seems that, while the clumps do form quickly, they can be kind of mushy and break apart if not given enough time before scooping. Since the litter absorbs odors well, I don’t mind waiting it out–but if you like to scoop right away, this might be a drawback for you.
I never noticed an odor coming from the box, and while scooping I only smelt the fresh scent of the litter itself. While some dust built up on the sides of the box, there was no noticeable dust in the air while pouring or scooping. When emptying the bag, I noticed a small pile of dust at the bottom.
Overall, I can see why this litter has won over so many cat parents. It’s lightweight, sustainably-made, and has minimal dust. While it does track, it’s not as bad as the clay litters I’ve tried. Its main drawback is the price.
What Do Customers Think of Weruva Cat Litter?
Positive Reviews
“”Scent, lightweight, tiny, lightweight pieces for paws, minimal dust/tracking and no sticking to paws & backsides!” – by Teddy, on Chewy, June 21, 2025
“This litter has helped save our cat. Our elderly kitty has been fighting kidney disease. She was eating her clay litter, and we switched to this. She took to it fairly quickly, and odor control is great. It clumps well, and scoops fine with the scooper. I do hate how it tracks. But she’s happy, so I deal.” – by Minny, on Amazon, April 9, 2025
Most reviewers appreciate that the litter is lightweight, contains odors well, and isn’t too dusty. Some people like that it tracks less than their old litter, and there are mixed reviews on whether or not it clumps well.
Negative Reviews
“I decided to try this because I wanted to switch from clay litter & it’s dust. To introduce it to my cats, I sprinkled a little bit on top of their clay litter. My two younger cats were fine with it, but I have an older cat who’s very resistant to changes. She also dislikes litter that’s hard on her feet & typically won’t use crystal or extruded litter (wood, cor, paper, etc.). From the pictures, I thought it looked like smaller pieces than many of the extruded litters, but the pieces are still too big. My older cat just wouldn’t use it. If you have cats that aren’t real fussy, this might be an option for you. It has a pleasant ‘woody’ smell. It does a good job of absorbing urine, though you should probably leave it sit for a while before scooping. It doesn’t absorb as quickly as clay & crystal litters & needs a little time to be completely absorb into the pellets. It doesn’t track too terribly, though you will find a few pieces here & there on the floor. It doesn’t vacuum up easily using a dustbuster, though there’s no problem if using a full sized vacuum. This is okay. I might have continued using it had my older cat used it. She just wouldn’t. It’s also a little expensive in my opinion.” – by Lori, on Chewy, December 20, 2024
Customer’s main complaints are poor clumping, with the litter not handling large amounts of liquid well and clumps breaking apart as they scoop. Others dislike how much the litter tracks and find it difficult to sift.
